Dear wonderful people,
I am writing to tell you that West County Herb Company will be closing its doors on October 31st, 2019.
I have loved being a part of Occidental. I have met dear friends, had my faith in humanity reinvigorated and learned so much from all of you. It’s time for a change for me and I hope to see many of you in the next few weeks and have the chance to have some tea together and chat.
When I had the vision that would become West County Herb Company a little over 11 years ago, I wanted to feel that I was contributing to my community and wondered how I could use my gifts and privilege to support this idea. I was (and still am) in awe of the abundance of plants that grow here and the humans making beautiful products with so much heart and hard work. I felt that learning about our local resources and creating local economies is one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the planet and our own lives.
With this in mind, I set out to create a space that featured locally sourced herbs and herbal products that would be beautiful and welcoming. I wanted to create an inviting atmosphere where people could feel safe to be themselves. I wanted the space to be soothing to all the senses. I wanted to assure people that they could trust their bodies to move toward health and ease when given the nourishment, support and space. I wanted to encourage folks to take the time to sit in nature, to notice what surrounds them, to soften, to make themselves a pot of tea, to laugh, to sigh, to cry, to feel a part of the beautiful world around them. It was never really about “selling” stuff.
I feel like I want to first praise the plants for all they have given me. The most direct line I have with the love that is in me and around me is through the plants. I have learned so much from their gentle generosity. I have learned about reaching toward the light, how to be quiet, to bend, to accept, to be unique, to cooperate with the seasons, to be joyful, to be deep, to thrive where I am.
I have so many friends and teachers of the human variety to thank also. They have helped make West County Herb Company what it is and my gratitude is huge. I will hopefully be able to thank you all in person in the near future, because it just won't fit in this letter!
One of the best parts of this experience has been being surprised by the openness and goodness of people. I feel like I've seen the very best of folks. The people who have walked through the door over the years have made me a better person. I want you to know that I am honored that some of you let yourselves be vulnerable in my presence. I see you and I love you.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s been a magic time for me.
P.S. There will be some classes continuing into November and maybe a party and/or a final craft show and sale, so stay tuned!
